In a few days I’ll assist a friend in upgrading their motherboard. I wanted to check if there were any preparations needed before or after the switch. I’m concerned the Microsoft activation might fail again since we’re changing hardware, so we should be sure about that. Should we remove all current drives from the old boards? Do we need to reinstall Windows? If we do, will it wipe everything on the NVMe storage too? The main change is moving from ATX to MATX.

I’d remove any programs linked to the motherboard, such as RGB settings or system utilities, though this becomes less critical now that you’re using the same brand. You don’t need to reinstall Windows—it will handle drivers automatically—but it’s still wise to back up important files before switching. If Windows Hello or Bitlocker are active, address them prior to the change.
