I’m upgrading my main work computer. I’m currently using an i5 4670 on an H81 motherboard. The I/O is beginning to fail (USB ports, LAN port, etc.), so I bought a refurbished z87 motherboard. I verified compatibility with my CPU and it should work fine. My concern is whether I need to reinstall Windows or drivers. Can I simply replace the motherboard and let Windows 10 handle it? Thanks in advance.

Windows should adapt naturally since the changes come from the motherboard itself. A new installation would be helpful, but it makes sense to avoid setting everything up from scratch if the current one isn’t working. If that doesn’t fix the issue, a fresh install is the best option.

Ensure your OEM Windows version is linked to your Microsoft account before modifying hardware. Switching the motherboard often makes Windows treat it as a different system, potentially causing activation issues because of OEM license restrictions.

My friend who handles IT set up Windows. It's unclear whether it's from the original manufacturer or a retail source.
