I'm working with a Plex/NAS server on Ubuntu 14.04 and looking to boost storage. Btrfs offers several advantages over ext4. The transition from ext4 to btrfs is relatively straightforward, though it depends on your setup. You can combine both file systems in the same system, including RAID configurations like RAID 1. The process of changing involves specific steps—let me know if you'd like details. Feel free to ask for more information.

1. Compression, multidevice, checksumming, snapshots, COW 2. A conversion tool exists, but I’d recommend just reformatting.
3. Yes.
4. No, a single drive is fine.
5. Usually create a fresh filesystem. Which system are you using? Is this your boot drive? What storage configuration do you have?

I have a backup of the NAS data. The Plex library is too big for a current backup, but that’s acceptable now. System: AMD FX 6300 ASRock 970a-g/3.1 Nvidia 210 650 watt psu 500GB WD Blue 7.2k boot drive 1x160GB 5.4k WD (salvaged) 1x200GB 7.2k WD (salvaged) 2x4TB 7.2k Seagate Barracuda I plan to add more 4TB drives later. I want to convert the 4TB drives to Btrfs and keep the rest as ext4.

Missed the chance to note three USB 3.0 external HDDs (750GB, 1.5TB, 2TB). The 1.5TB model serves as a backup, while the others are currently being converted for backup as well.
