Hello, I understand you're looking to upgrade your core switch. I'm not familiar with networking details, but I can help outline common practices and considerations. It's wise to plan carefully—options include configuring the new switch directly or performing a gradual migration. Think about factors like downtime, testing, documentation, and backup plans. Let me know if you'd like more specifics!

Which component do you intend to swap? What is your reason for doing so? What purpose does it serve? Is this a personal setup or a professional operation?

I understand they don’t expect me to be an expert, just let me take my time figuring out the right solution. This is the layout from the document the person left behind. The SW56 is the main core switch that needs replacement. I think it’s a 3 x 48 port stack.

The downtime should be acceptable for a weekend install. For migrations, you’d handle them during maintenance windows or use automated tools to minimize disruption.

Check if every edge switch relies solely on one gigabit link to the core. Identify what connects to them and confirm port counts. Clarify the switch models being referenced. Determine whether any support Layer 3 functionality.

You're asking why you're considering a change. You're highlighting what the existing option doesn't provide and what improvements you hope for in the alternative. It's about identifying gaps and setting clear expectations for the new version.

Catalyst 3750G replacement is needed because of its age (sorry, I checked the incorrect switch).

If you need to replace the chassis, follow these steps:
1) Position the new core switch stack or chassis next to or above the existing one.
2) Transfer most basic settings and verify interface mappings carefully.
3) Export the configurations (AAA, TACACS, RADIUS, SVIs, etc.) and confirm proper mapping to the new device.
4a) Ensure HSRP, routing protocols, etc., are also prepared.
4b) Connect to the upstream firewall/router and establish routing adjacency with the new core.
4c) Verify all connections appear and you can reach out from a SVI or loopback address.
4d) When performing maintenance, swap one VLAN at a time: power down the VLAN on the old core, bring it up on the new, then reassign connections.
The main concern is IP conflicts—double-check that any loopback addresses don’t clash with the existing switch and proceed one SVI at a time for better control. If you have sufficient time, you can bypass 4d and replace everything simultaneously after shutting down all SVIs on the old core.

I'll give this a try - I'm still waiting on the new switched to arrive - once they are installed I'll update you. Hopefully no issues
