Hello. Before Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, you have options to switch to a different desktop environment that matches Unity’s feel and design. You’re currently using Unity on a MacBook and Desktop running 16.10 with Ubuntu 16.10. You can either install KDE Plasma on top of Unity or replace Unity entirely. Alternatively, you could reinstall the OS and switch to Kubuntu with KDE Plasma. After a year of use, you’ve made adjustments like setting up the trackpad in Unity, so I want to know if upgrading to Kubuntu is necessary or if KDE Plasma works well enough on your current setup. Are there major differences between Ubuntu and Kubuntu beyond the desktop environment choice?

You're aware that 17.04 is the correct version? Make sure to update before switching to KDE. Once done, you can simply run sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop and switch to it at login. I don't see major differences between Ubuntu and Kubuntu beyond the default desktop environment and installed apps. I suggest using the Kubuntu Backports PPA for the latest KDE updates. If you wish KDE to resemble Unity, install additional widgets. For a menu similar to Unity Dash when maximized, use the Application Dashboard; for a non-maximized look, choose Simple Menu. To add titlebar buttons in a panel, you'll need the Active Window Control widget. Unfortunately, the Global Menu widget works only with Qt-based apps, so avoid it if you plan to use GTK applications and their menu bars. If you need more options...
