I bought a new laptop and switched to a brand-new SSD by wiping it completely using an old one from another computer (using Linux tools on a USB stick). Because of this swap, I had to reinstall Windows when I turned the laptop on again, which I did. I originally planned not to use a license key right away and just install the Home version later so I could activate it afterward. Unfortunately, I couldn't enter a key or pick between different versions because the old Windows key from my old computer kept running in my new one and automatically started installing Home instead of Pro. Can I force a change on this laptop? Or is there another way to make sure the system installs unactivated? All my important files are saved on an external drive, so wiping the laptop's hard disk would wipe everything anyway if needed. I tried finding a video about removing keys from BIOS settings but was unsure if that method works for me or what exactly it does. Thanks!

To go from Home to Pro in Microsoft, you just have to buy the right version and click "upgrade" in Windows. You don't even need to delete everything; you can simply add features without starting over. The only thing you really need is a Pro copy.

I won't think the installer picks one disk over the other. If you pick Pro, it probably should not try to use the Win 10 Home key. Maybe laptops are different. He isn't asking to buy it, so you don't have to. I wonder if it uses that key when you aren't connected to the internet during install.

Maybe I was wrong about having the home version before. That means if I started with just Home edition, I'd still have to pay for a Pro upgrade when switching from home to pro. But if I already had Pro, things are a bit different.

What way did you make use of to start up the installation?

I plugged a USB with Windows 11 installation files into my PC, because there were no other drives left in the system and it had been wiped clean. The computer didn't show me any options for choosing which version of Windows to get. Instead, it just kept agreeing to the Terms of Service until I picked custom install or upgrade by pressing Enter again.

I should have mentioned that was a blank 32 GB stick where I ran the Windows 11 creation software.

Hmm... that sounds weird. But what if I just download and install the free Win 11 Home version? Then, once I have an official Pro key, I could just use that to upgrade without much hassle.

So that's my backup plan in case things go wrong, but I want to do this right away. I'll start by installing on an old system like Windows 8 or 10 and then switch up to version eleven as soon as possible tomorrow morning.
