My son's laptop stopped working suddenly. The day before it failed, he realized Xbox notifications weren't showing and his clock/date was incorrect. After fixing it, the next day he switched from Minecraft to YouTube and it froze completely. I thought the CMOS battery might be the issue, but it didn't help. I tried many things on YouTube and nothing worked. A technician told me the CPU was damaged because the previous repair didn't include a protective chip or regulator. Now I'm wondering if I can replace the motherboard instead. I found one on AliExpress but am worried about spending 500 without guaranteeing a better part. Also, can I upgrade to a better motherboard, CPU, or GPU? My laptop is an Asus ROG Strix GL503G. Any advice would be really appreciated! Thanks, TJ

You can purchase a used laptop at a lower price. Or invest a few hundred more for a newer model. In either case, avoid spending money on a brand new one—it's too risky.
