SW: Republic Commando, error 'Stopped Working' in Windows 8
Hi There, I recently explored my Steam collection and felt the need to try SWRC. I saved the file and attempted to launch it. Most of the time it would display an error like "Star Wars Republic Commando has stopped working" or show a strange closure message. The game would typically end after about five seconds of starting. Only rarely did it actually start, and even then it would crash when I tried to open it in full screen. Once, after creating an account, I learned the hard way that setting 'bump mapping' to off or using a very low resolution helped. I adjusted those settings and saved, but the game still crashed. I changed the default game files and settings multiple times, even uninstalling it several times, but nothing worked. The SWRC launcher requires a CD key, which isn’t available through Steam. I spent around two to three hours trying to fix it on Windows 8.1 and am frustrated. I’m hoping someone can help or suggest alternatives. Would it be possible to run a virtual machine? I’m new to this and don’t even know what a dual boot is. Also, are there any files I should modify or remove to make Windows 8.1 work? Thanks a lot.
You're using an AMD card, but the VM is blocking GPU access (even though it's free software). Try a workaround. See PC Gaming Wiki for details: Star Wars: Republic Commando issues fixed. You can also run it in Windows XP or 98 compatibility mode by right-clicking the executable, selecting compatibility settings, choosing an OS, and ensuring you're running as administrator.
