So boys, I own a core 2 duo laptop with 2.6ghz, 4mb and 6gb ram. It's running the GMA X3100, which is barely working. The machine has an Expresscard port and I know where to buy a cheap EXP GDC that pairs well with a used GPU. My laptop only draws 45w, while a PCIe 16 slot can handle up to 75w, so I'm considering getting a GT740 4gb DDR3 as my GPU.

Do you think it's feasible to run both the EXP GDC and my laptop using a single USB-C charging brick, like a 180w charger with two 90w outputs?

I'll get a DC to USB adapter for my laptop—it's simple.

You're welcome to help me find a barrel jack for the EXP GDC. I'm aiming to keep things light and budget-friendly.

Does this sound like something you've encountered before?

You aim for the CPU to remain the main constraint.

Gaming isn't my top priority; I'm looking for plenty of video output. Right now, my IGPU struggles to push CPU usage past 60% in any simple game before reaching full capacity. Even during gaming sessions, I won't be able to make the GPU work at its best. I need it for hardware acceleration in a few apps, improving video encoding and decoding for smoother playback. These tasks aren't bandwidth-intensive.

I hadn't thought about gaming at all.
No matter what you do, or what additional components you attach, that CPU will be limiting everything.
External GPU - also known as "transforming a weak laptop into a weak desktop."

I’m going to share my real goals with you now, maybe it’ll help. This laptop holds a special place in my past, and I want to bring it back to life, giving it fresh energy. I have a projector and an old surround sound system. I plan to host movie nights and LAN parties, playing games such as Halo, Worms, Smash, Mario Kart—mostly retro titles that support split-screen or LAN playback. My current setup is handled by my display adapter, which strains the CPU and limits performance. I’m looking for an external GPU solution that’s portable and smooth enough to run these games without lag. It should also support hardware acceleration for BlasterX and Discord, plus handle encoding/decoding for movies from VLC over Wi-Fi, so everything works together seamlessly.
