In short, I’m using Windows 8 because I got it cheaply last year for my build. Saving on the operating system lets me invest more in hardware, but I know Windows 8 is really poor. I’m about to fully format a spare HDD from an old PC and move everything onto a new SSD I’ll buy later. I need guidance on the best tools to wipe the HDD completely and the easiest way to transfer my files. I hope you can help me avoid missing anything or making things harder. Thanks!

The built-in Windows 7 installer works adequately for your needs. The most effective method is transferring your files from the original drive to an external storage device, then relocating them again after a clean installation. Because you’ll be switching operating systems, you’ll need to reinstall all drivers and programs to maintain compatibility.

When you insert the Windows installer DVD or USB drive, choose 'custom' instead of 'upgrade.' This lets you handle partitions in that section. You can remove, add, and format partitions through this option.
