Hello, I'm trying to upgrade the BIOS on my Z370 Xtreme 4 using a new 9th-gen CPU, but I only have an 8th-gen one. I'm wondering if I can boot the motherboard with a 6th-gen i5 to apply the update.

Only the latest 8th and 9th generation processors are compatible with Z390. The Z270 only works with 6th and 7th generation chips. Consider returning the CPU and getting something functional on a current platform like Ryzen 5000 or Intel 11th gen, or look for a good Z390 board if that’s not possible.

This model won't work with any 8th or 9th generation CPU. Those use a distinct version of the 1151 socket, even though they look similar. You'd need a different board. Did you mean to refer only to the 6th and 7th generations?
