I own a ROG CROSSHAIR VII HERO (WI-FI) MOBO. When I first got it in 2019, I attempted a BIOS update but found the file wasn’t correct. After weeks of trying, I gave up and didn’t revisit it. Now three years later, my CPU is showing signs of trouble—lags and freezes after just an hour. I’m back to the same situation. I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 9 5950X, which requires a BIOS update for the X470 chipset to function properly. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
- Formatted my USB flash drive as FAT32 (failed)
- Downloaded the BIOS update directly from ASUS’ website and tried older versions (no luck)
- Accessed the update via the BIOS menu online (still unsuccessful)
- Inserted the flash drive into the rear IO slot of the BIOS USB port (didn’t work)
- Renamed the .CAP file without changing its name (still no improvement)
I’m at a loss and need guidance on what to do next.

First off download the newest BIOS: https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-cr...pdesk_bios As you can see you need to rename the file to C7HWIFI.CAP, you either do that by using the BIOSRenamer program or simply rename by using rename function in windows F2 or right click, rename. No need to put .cap in the end, as the file is already cap. Format USB to FAT32, fast format also work fine. Shutdown PC. (PSU need to stay on) Put USB into USB port marked BIOS: Press and hold the button marked BIOS until it start flashing green. takes about 3-5 sec. Wait for the blinking green light to stop flashing. Will take a few minutes. Turn on PC after BIOS stops flashing green. GG
I also tried that but it didn't work. Eventually I discovered the fix, though it was the worst and most time-consuming approach I've ever taken. I had to download every BIOS update from 2018 to 2020 until the MOBO required renaming. Once I reached the update needing a rename, I could apply it using the renamed version. Overall, I had to change my BIOS eight times before it functioned properly. Finally, it worked and no longer needed to be placed in the BIOS slot—though that caused my system to start malfunctioning and prevent access to the BIOS altogether. I ended up using the front USB port instead.
