I own a few HP Intel Core i5-7400 3Ghz 8 GB RAM PCs running Windows 10 that are several years old (around 6 to 8 years). They won’t be supported with Windows 10 anymore, and clearly Microsoft says they can’t run Windows 11 on this generation of processor (about the 7th one). All other details seem okay. One machine is used for browsing, streaming, movies, and music; the other for basic tasks like office work or light browsing—no gaming or heavy graphics. Recently, both have been running slowly and with some lag (though I sometimes think the monitors might be contributing). I don’t need top-tier performance but want them to function smoothly and securely without too much hassle. I’m trying to decide the best, simplest, and most affordable path forward. My tech skills are basic, but I usually manage things when needed.

Here are the choices I’m evaluating:

- Proceed with a clean install of Windows 11 and test it out. I’ve heard mixed feedback; some say updates can be tricky because you have to do them yourself.
- Affordable mini PCs with similar specs but Windows 11 and updated processors—similar experiences reported, especially regarding heat management.
- Refurbished older PCs with better specs available on eBay or similar sites for around $125–150 with Windows 11 installed. The processors appear unsupported for Windows 11, so I wonder if I’ll face similar update problems.
- Look for a decent deal on new PCs that work with Windows 11 and have solid specs (around $300).

My aim is simple, reliable performance without excessive effort. Thank you for your help!

I would do something like this and you have 30 days whether to keep or return it. PC with integrated storage and memory seem to do just fine for average, everyday use. There's even a $20 coupon as well as a 10% off promo code from the $170.

We have still several months before the end of Windows 10 support.
You might purchase an affordable 512 GB SSD, disconnect all drives from one of your computers, and try installing Windows 11. I recommend using 23 H2 for better compatibility and observe how it performs.
You don't necessarily need a Windows license to test version 11 and evaluate its functionality.
If everything functions smoothly, you can proceed confidently; if not, issues will be addressed immediately so you can choose your next steps.

This applies just as much to Mac users, perhaps even more so. I'm always open to testing new options, whether it's Windows or macOS. We usually adapt.

These devices can easily continue performing their tasks under an environment like MX Linux, requiring minimal adjustment and maintaining most of the existing software. Just discard Windows!
