So my friend lives way out there, in a remote area. He uses frontier internet which is already pretty poor, but he allows me to connect through his network. I have a weak Wi-Fi adapter outside my window that helps me reach his signal. The connection isn’t terrible, but it’s not great either—works most of the time unless he’s using something like a Roku or his mom is streaming. I’m thinking about whether I could set up my own router to improve things, maybe upgrade speeds. I have several routers and modems, but connecting them to his isn’t easy because of distance and his mom’s tech issues. It’s frustrating since I only get decent service when he’s not using it, or when his mom is on something else. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Because it's a frontier area, they're just one step away from failing. The ADSL they use isn't even considered broadband by the current FCC rules. Their connection is likely terrible—steaming one person can ruin everyone else's experience. They really need a better internet plan. The main problem is that the line might offer the fastest speed available, but if you live in BFE, the cable company won't extend it since those spots aren't profitable enough. You're basically caught between a rock and a hard place.

Thanks for all the responses. I thought there wasn’t much I could do given the slow internet speed. If anyone joins online for something basic like Netflix or YouTube, it really disrupts everyone else.
