I’m dealing with a persistent issue on my laptop. I’ve tried updating to the newest Windows version, ran Windows Defender and found nothing unusual, installed Malwarebytes and ADWCleaner after a month each time, and checked the task manager for the responsible EXE. So far, I haven’t added any other software beyond Steam, VLC, Chrome, etc. It’s been roughly four months since I last installed anything, yet the popup keeps appearing—especially when playing Rocket League. It always minimizes the game to launch itself. I’m not using risky websites or forcing auto-installations, and this is the first problem I’ve faced since setting up my PC five years ago.

I saw the same exact popup on my laptop before. The best way to fix it was using Task Manager, but it kept coming back every time I started the computer. It disappeared now, and the solution you need is something you might not want to accept but should expect: reinstalling Windows or resetting it.

Power on in safe mode, check if the issue persists.

Open Task Manager, locate the app, disable it, then use Regedit to search for its registry entries under the user account and remove them. After that, run Sophos Home Scan to check for any remaining traces.

It might seem silly, but if your Chrome extensions are connected to your account and you're logging in with the same one repeatedly, there could be something linked to the account itself. Look through your extensions and confirm nothing unusual is attached. I faced this issue before, and removing the extension resolved it. I also helped a friend with the same problem on their computer.

The Mshta.exe file is probably hidden in an unexpected location, possibly indicating a threat.

Use this tool from Microsoft to scan for issues. Alternatively, consider trying Norton Power Eraser, though it may trigger false alarms. You might also attempt a system reset via Recovery settings without deleting files: Start > Settings > Update and Security > Recovery > Advanced Startup. If none of these work, reformatting your PC could be necessary.
