Hello, your system runs a Ryzen 5900X. Is that sufficient for the RTX 4090? You plan to play at 3840x1600 with 144hz on a dedicated gaming monitor. The PC will be used solely for gaming. You also have a brand new i9 13900K, a motherboard, and DDR5 RAM ready for future upgrades or selling. Previously you used it for creative tasks on a Mac, but switched to Mac now. I’m not sure if keeping the i9 is worthwhile for gaming alone. The best choice seems to be sticking with the 5900X unless it causes bottlenecks. A good alternative would be selling the i9 and 5900X and buying a more power-efficient model like the 7800X3D for gaming. Thank you!

5900x can manage a 4090 in certain scenarios, particularly when you're not using full 4K resolution. The impact on you will differ depending on the amount and severity. Replacing it with a 5800x3D would be beneficial, and going with a 7800x3D would be even more advantageous. The 4090 is somewhat unusual due to its exceptional speed; you likely need the newest hardware to maintain performance.

It depends on the specific game. The 5900X remains a strong chip but may struggle against an RTX 4090 in certain scenarios. When all settings are maximized, those challenges become rarer. While 3840x1600 offers high resolution, it contains roughly 75% of the pixels of 4K, meaning your performance will fall between 1440p and 4K based on CPU constraints. If you were making a decision, given the possibility to upgrade your hardware, I’d recommend moving to an AM5 setup with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. It’s around 40% quicker for gaming than the 5900X while delivering comparable multi-core efficiency for other tasks, making it a solid upgrade rather than just a minor change.

A 5950x kept up with my 3090 across several sessions. Many modern GPU-heavy titles also put a strain on the CPU. A 4090 offers a completely different experience, and even a 13900k can feel CPU-bound in some scenarios when paired with a 4090.
