Suddenly, my computer feels sluggish like a turtle on rough terrain!
I left my Dell Precision M4800 laptop off, unused, for roughly three weeks.
Recently, when I tried to use it again, the performance was very poor.
It requires at least ten times longer than its previous boot time to start.
A web page only loads after about ten minutes of pressing a link.
I’ve never faced such a severe issue before.
I have several security tools installed: Avast, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and SpywareBlaster.
I ran a full system scan, and no threats were detected.
The problem persists even after booting up.
All browsers are extremely slow.
Nothing has changed since the machine was turned off weeks ago.
Not even a Windows update has occurred.
This is really frustrating.
I’m not new to troubleshooting, and I usually manage to fix most issues on my own.
What steps should I take to resolve this?
Update your post with complete hardware details and operating system specifics.
PSU: make, model, wattage, age, condition (original to build, new, refurbished, used).
Disk drive(s): make, model, capacity, current usage percentage?
List of all connected peripherals.
Network connection: wired or wireless?
Use Task Manager, Resource Monitor, and Performance Monitor to track laptop performance.
Also try Process Explorer (Microsoft, free) for deeper insights into system activity.
Examine each tool individually, focusing on one at a time.
Identify which resources are being consumed heavily (% usage).
Mostly rely on Windows Security/Defender for antivirus and malware scanning.
Check performance initially, then after disabling all additional AV applications.
Goal is to pinpoint what’s hindering the laptop’s speed.
It seems the device reached a critical point where minor changes caused issues.
Possible cause: a faulty or corrupted file—often resulting in the infamous “Perfect Storm.”
Appreciate the effort, but the laptop stopped working completely.
After investigating further, I adjusted a small setting in the BIOS concerning the processor—disabling SpeedStep—and that resolved the issue.
