A few weeks ago, I experienced a strange issue while gaming. My monitors suddenly went dark and emitted beeping noises before returning to normal, only for the problem to repeat itself with subsequent gaming sessions. After certain games like GTA and Rainbow Six, I would encounter severe performance issues lasting roughly one to two minutes, followed by a complete game crash. Furthermore, when playing games I can successfully run, such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, attempting to open a new tab in Chrome consistently results in an "error code: out of memory" message. I've attempted various troubleshooting steps independently, including modifying the registry in Windows, but these efforts have been unsuccessful. My BIOS and Task Manager both indicate 8GB of RAM is installed, yet it appears my system isn’t utilizing the full capacity. Notably, my RAM usage is consistently elevated at idle (around 40-50%), leading me to suspect a RAM-related issue, although I am unsure if this is indeed the root cause.

Here are my PC specifications:
ASUS GTX 1050ti graphics card
8GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM
Ryzen 3 2200G processor
Windows 10 Home
ASUS PRIME A320M-K Motherboard

Insufficient memory, specifically 8GB, is often a problem. The fact that your system consistently utilizes 40-50% of its RAM while idle in Windows is unusual. This frequently leads to “out of memory” errors. As you launch games, RAM usage will increase, and if it’s already near that 40-50% threshold when you begin a game, attempting to open a new browser window will likely result in performance problems similar to those you’ve experienced.

To identify what's consuming your RAM, open Task Manager while idle and sort processes by memory usage from highest to lowest. Please specify your power supply unit (PSU) brand and model.

Chrome consumes the largest amount of memory, approximately 300MB, followed by Antimalware Service Executable at around 120MB. This combination shouldn't account for a total of 4000MB, considering my power supply is a Corsair VS550.

A recent attempt to install a customized Minecraft version was exceedingly slow, prompting me to examine my system's performance using Task Manager. I observed that a substantial 94% of available memory was being utilized, despite only approximately 3500 MB being in active use. This leads me to believe that my total RAM capacity—4 GB—is not being fully employed.

Avoid using task manager. Utilize the resource monitor instead.

The system performance tracker indicates a comparable situation, potentially identical circumstances.

Java consumes a significant amount of system resources. What are you employing it for?
Is Java being utilized to scan the system for malware?

Python was the culprit because I was preparing to deploy a Minecraft mod collection with the goal of utilizing all my system memory. Windows security software displayed no alerts regarding this activity.

Using applications like Java, Discord, MSMPeng, and all Twitch-related programs, along with other background processes such as the Twitch app and multiple game launchers, combined with attempting to run Minecraft with modifications, can consume a substantial amount of memory—approximately 7109MB plus hardware reserved. To reduce RAM usage, you'll need to close unnecessary programs or consider upgrading to a 2x8GB RAM kit.
