The setup story here is a bit lengthy, but I’ll try to simplify it. I installed a new internet connection today. Since I already had a decent router, I bought a modem (Zyxel VMG1312-B30A) to connect it. While configuring the modem, I faced an issue: its web interface isn’t reachable, which is necessary to complete the setup. After some research, it seems a special firmware version is blocking access. To fix this, I need to assign my PC a static IP address. However, Windows also requests additional details like the subnet prefix, gateway, and DNS settings—information I’m completely unsure about. I worry this might not be straightforward, especially since I’m in Germany and the ISP is o2. Thanks to anyone who can assist!

You've assigned the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, ignoring gateway and DNS settings; leave them blank. After configuring the modem, reinitialize your PC's configuration to use DHCP.

You entered 255.255.255.0 for the subnet prefix length and left other fields blank. The system responded with an error about saving IP settings.

You were relying on the clumsy Windows 10 interface—just use Windows+R, then type ncpa.cpl and hit Enter. This will show your network devices. Right-click on Ethernet, select Properties, then Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP v4). From there you can set a static IP as needed.

Thanks! It’s hard to tell if it succeeded because there were no mistakes.
