You're feeling a bit overwhelmed, but you're doing the right thing by thinking ahead. Let's break it down. For cloud storage, you might want to consider options that can handle your variety of devices and files—like a dedicated media server or a robust NAS. Since you already use iPhones, MacBooks, and Linux for school, a cross-platform solution could be ideal. Think about services that support multiple file types and offer easy access from any device. Also, since you're concerned about privacy and control, look for providers with strong security features. Don’t worry too much about paranoia—most reputable services are designed to protect your data. If you need help comparing options, just let me know!

I place a lot of confidence in backblaze. When you need to recover your files, they provide a hard drive containing all your information so you don’t have to depend on slow internet. I’m using the latest edge browser with ublock origin (which blocks ads and certain trackers).

Thanks! I'll take a look. Is Edge now the preferred browser? I used to think it was a bad choice for Firefox. It seems to be working fine so far.

The update mainly changes the appearance to Chrome, but it doesn't really affect functionality. I might just use Google Drive instead.

well yes.. but actually no... It is based on chromium and not chrome . chromium is a basic set of code that is the rendering engine etc for the browser but everything on top is custom. LOTS of browsers use chromium but they are not all chrome. edge on chromium re-did the memory management so it uses significantly less ram. it also has some built in tracking prevention. it does collect a lot of data (i think even more than chrome) but it all goes to microsoft instead of google.
