Stock clock temperatures are hitting 71 degrees prime95. Can it be safe to overclock?
Hi,
Your Ryzen 7 1700X is showing stock temperatures of 71 degrees after cooling with a 212 turbo, though they vary between 61 and 71 under prime95 for about half an hour. The voltage is consistently at 1.2 on auto and never exceeds it.
Is it safe to attempt overclocking, or are you taking unnecessary risks?

Hallo,

I believe the temperatures should stay in the 30-40 range for Intel, though I’m not entirely confident about Ryzen but assume it’s similar.

Hello,
My Ryzen 7 1700x running temps after cooling with a 212 turbo are hitting around 71 degrees. They vary between 61 and 71 under prime95 (about half an hour). The voltage is consistently at 1.2 on auto, never exceeding that.

I believe the temps should stay in the 30-40 range for Intel, though I’m less certain about Ryzen. I’ll assume a similar range.
The person asking is running under full load with Prime95, not idle.
To them, those temps are acceptable for stress testing. There’s still some margin for overclocking.
Typical ranges are: 30-40 for idle, 45-60 for gaming, and 70-80+ for full load stress.
That gives a solid reference point.

Ideal temperatures would be roughly 30-40 while idle, 45-60 during gaming, and 70-80+ for full load stressing.
That sounds good! I’ll begin the OC process and keep you updated on the results. It could help someone facing a similar situation.
Yeah, good luck. My setup is 1600x @3.9. It was pretty simple, but many found it tougher. At first, I struggled because I had my RAM OC'ed and then tried the CPU. I ended up taking the RAM OC off, then doing the CPU first, and finally returning to the RAM. Now everything works smoothly. A tip might be useful.
Happy OC'ing
Edit: My basic OC brings temps down to 80°C on Prime95. I tend to keep it at 80°C or less for my OC's, though others might suggest pushing it higher.
Check temperatures using the newest Ryzen Master software.
Some monitoring tools don’t support the 20c temperature offset built into the x-series chips.
You might be seeing lower temperatures than expected.
That’s a good point. Although CoreTemp, HWMonitor, and Ryzen Master all display accurate temps, I believe the recent updates to those temperature measurement programs have largely resolved this issue.
^ true but many users stick with older versions.
It's fair to say 71c works well for an 8c/16t Ryzen in prime.
I’d be cautious about overclocking if you’re using it for workstation tasks like heavy rendering, as I still think it’s higher than expected for an EVO 212.
For everyday use, gaming, or light streaming, feel free to proceed.
I’ve seen it hard to exceed 60% usage on my [email protected] under fairly intense loads.
Bf1 mp plus a background 4k render hits 61%, which is the most realistic scenario I’ve encountered.
I’m using a significantly more powerful cooler than a 212.
