You're weighing two popular options for your i9 13900K setup. The Z790 offers Thunderbolt support, which could be handy for certain peripherals, while the Z690 is more budget-friendly. The MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI is a solid choice if you prioritize cost. RAM and GPU requirements are clear, so focus on stability and performance. Consider other models like the ASRock Z790 TAICHI CARRARA if you need more features, but weigh the extra cost carefully.

IIRC Z790 could offer a slightly improved memory layout, making it a better choice if you plan to use four DIMM slots.

Unless you require pcie 5.0 or a pcie 5.0 m.2 (either one active), the z790 offers nothing additional. The tomahawk will perform well once a bios update is applied.

The differences between PCIe 5 in both models are minimal. Both Z690 and Z790 support PCIe 5 for the main slot, typically for graphics cards. M.2 slots use PCIe 4 in both. The lanes mentioned originate from the CPU, so the chipset can't alter anything. The image below highlights only these variations. Exercise caution with ASRock voltages. Even in high-end boards, some unstable voltages are common. This was also the case with previous generations of Monos. It's uncertain if this applies to this generation. For the 13900K, it might be a concern. If the motherboard includes a BIOS flashback button, Z690 is sufficient.
