Shows interest in general feedback. Early sneak peeks of the Vulkan API have earned good reactions from tech critics and insiders. Given that many seasoned gamers are more conscious of Microsoft’s somewhat intrusive strategy with Windows, could a free SteamOS gain traction now? Probably hinges on major AAA titles hitting shelves, but Vulkan has backing from notable names like Blizzard, EA, Microsoft (oddly), Oculus, Oxide, Unity, Valve (obviously) and War gaming. WB also committed to support by releasing Batman Arkham Knight—better than the Windows version. I was really looking forward to SteamOS when it was first announced. A free operating system focused on gamers made perfect sense to me. It offered PC gaming power with console-like hardware control. However, since its debut, enthusiasm seems to have faded. Valve has recently improved their approach, nearing the release of OEM and retail Steam Machines, with ads popping up on Steam itself. Just curious what others think.

I don't think SteamOS will ever become a replacement for Windows. Too few games currently (even if this changed there are still Origin games etc.) and its not a very good OS for web browsing, etc. (Yes, I am aware that there is a desktop).

I'm a bit curious, but I'll likely wait for more options before making a change. It would be better if the interface felt more intuitive on the desktop.

I’m keen about this as a complete desktop upgrade, though more suited for pairing with another system. You currently have two machines—your primary editing rig and an HTPC connected to your 4KTV via controller. The HTPC works well with SteamOS, especially if you enable features like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or BBC iPlayer in the UK.
