Hi. I need to clarify a few points. I have Linux running on my laptop for non-game tasks and I’m thinking about installing Steam OS on my desktop so I can play games there. I want to keep using Linux for other things, especially network work.
1. Will the Steam OS provide the same free installation experience as a standard Linux setup? Or will it restrict what I can do?
2. How does a regular Linux installation compare to Steam OS in terms of performance or features? Any specific benefits?

I will run Ubuntu. You can enjoy the same games and also have a significantly improved desktop setup. Steam OS is essentially Debian with an enhanced Steam installation.
I operate on Ubuntu 16.04 without issues. There’s no advantage to choosing SteamOS over Ubuntu or Debian. If you go for SteamOS, you’ll have to set up another desktop environment such as Gnome3 and adjust the startup to use Gnome instead of Steam. It would be simpler to install a full OS with a proper desktop manager before adding Steam.
SteamOS offers one benefit compared to Ubuntu. Unity, the default for Ubuntu, demands significant system resources and can feel slow even on high-end machines. For gaming purposes, think about switching to Gnome3 on Ubuntu or trying Debian, Mint, or other Ubuntu versions that don’t run Unity.
I thought there had to be a reason Steam is preferred over standard Ubuntu. However, I have limited knowledge about Steam OS and it now feels quite redundant.
