I found an old HDD and tried running Steam OS with Windows 7 installed. It didn’t work. I double-checked everything during installation, but once it finished and rebooted, my PC stuck in a loop. I couldn’t recover the drive until I booted into my original Windows HDD and connected it externally after the system started.

Hello there! It looks like Steam is still in the early stages... unless you're looking for help here, feel free to join the broader conversation or anything that doesn't fit the current focus.

i didnt have any issues installing it as a primary OS on my old laptop. however it still lacked functionality and drivers at the time, so i put Kali on it.. honestly i think you must have done something wrong. EDIT: @ Sauron i think this is the perfect place to talk about Steam OS, even if it is in beta. although it may not be the most function, it is still in fact an operating system. General should not simply be a dumping ground when there is a perfect place to put it.

SteamOS isn't worth the effort for everyday use. I prefer Ubuntu 14.04.1 and simply adding Steam. Download the installer from the official site and follow the setup instructions.

I noticed it was intended as a direct observation rather than a request for guidance. Bugs are common in beta versions, but the explanation in the op didn’t clarify why they occur. That lack of detail makes this post less useful on its own. I think it might not fit well here. Still, I’m not a moderator and this doesn’t seem like something that needs reporting—it just felt a bit misplaced.

Because SteamOS isn't designed for a solid desktop setup, it leans heavily toward being an OEM system that closely mirrors Xbox and PS4 experiences rather than following trends like Ubuntu or Windows.

Absolutely not worthwhile to convert a desktop into a gaming setup. Steam offers its own full-screen option that works perfectly.

SteamOS isn't suitable for everyone. Consider using a desktop Linux distribution instead.
