I understand you're trying to find the most suitable method for playing old-school games on an emulator and streaming them to your TV. You've considered Steam Link and Shield, weighing cost and performance. Based on your setup—mid-range hardware with a solid connection but limited bandwidth—I’d recommend exploring Shield. It offers genuine hardware acceleration, which can significantly boost performance compared to the lower-end Steam Link. Since you're not on a top-tier machine and have moderate speeds, Shield should provide a better balance between quality and stability for streaming.

I can review both options and let you know what you prefer less.

I sent back the Steam Link. The process was frustrating. I installed it using a Gigabit-LAN connection, but the quality was poor and it couldn’t work independently of the PC. The bitrate fluctuated significantly.

It varies based on what you're aiming to recreate. I use my portable shield to run emulators, which works smoothly for PS1 and pre-PS1 games but not for GameCube, PS2, Xbox, or Wii. For older systems like Atari, Sega, PS1, or Game Boy, the shield handles them natively without issues—much simpler than streaming.
