So I have an 8BITDO Pro2, which is detected as X360 controller via Bluetooth, and I have OG x360 wireless controllers, which I can connect via dongle. Both work fine in Linux in my steam decks desktop mode as long as I don't have steam itself running. For some reason that results in the right stick moving the mouse cursor and the buttons not registering. I cannot use those controllers in gaming mode at all due to the same problem. They also register as multiple controllers at once, controller 2 and 3. 2 does nothing and 3 just is half and half, half as mouse and half as gaming device... My dualsense and DualShock work flawlessly right out of the box, even with gyro and the trackpad. I thought that especially the x360 controllers would just work, but they don't. Any ideas?
In the overall setup, configure any new controllers in the main, desktop, and chord areas. This helps avoid unwanted default actions by disabling unnecessary features. The entire "steam input" feature can mask your real controller, granting it access to a virtual Xbox controller—possibly explaining the dual input issue you're experiencing. *This is frustrating because you receive prompts like X,Y,A,B instead of the expected Sq,Cir,Tri,X.*
I attempted that and it functions in Gamemode, but it fails when switching to desktop. It seems acceptable, though not ideal. I've also faced issues playing certain games on an external monitor in Gamemode versus desktop, which isn't a full resolution.
I just need to wrap up this discussion and share the solution if anyone has the same issue. I double-checked the settings once more and overlooked something... my friend actually helped me out. The fix involves: in DESKTOP MODE, navigating to STEAM SETTINGS, then CONTROLLER and clicking DESKTOP CONFIGURATION. Press "Start" on your Steam Deck, choose the right controller, and press "X" to access templates. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to apply them—this looks like a bug. Once pressed "X" again, the new layout appears to work properly, and the 8BITDO PRO 2 functions as an external controller without OS features.
