Consider your long-term needs and the lifespan of each device. A Steam Deck is portable and great for casual gaming, but its performance may lag behind a dedicated gaming laptop over time. A gaming laptop like the 3060 offers more consistent power for demanding games, though it requires more space and maintenance. Given your PC's current state, investing in a laptop now could be better if you plan to upgrade later.

Wouldn't it be better to improve your computer? You could purchase an affordable laptop and use it for studying instead.

I fully understood after that. Choose a model with a 1240P/5500U or similar, then allocate the extra resources to the desktop. Light gaming was possible on my 3700U (CIV V, older titles like Halo Reach on 1080p medium worked), and later invested in the desktop setup with 2600X and an Rx 480 8GB card—still functional despite some age-related issues from the Polaris card.

It largely depends on what you're aiming for. A Steam Deck shines when you prioritize a compact display and prefer games suited to its size. However, if you need to view detailed items clearly, a regular desktop might be more suitable.

I’ve also considered the Steam Deck or laptop, but for you, my friend—laptops are better. If your professor is really stubborn, you might even need a MacBook for certain classes because your homework isn’t compatible with Windows or Steam Deck, and Game Pass doesn’t work there. So skip the hype and go for a laptop. It’s not the most exciting choice, but it makes sense logically.

RX 550 performs adequately. The top choice is a laptop with 3060 if you maintain it well, as it suits both study and gaming needs. If not, separate your tasks using a Steam Deck and a dedicated work laptop.
