On my extra HTPC I put in Ubuntu 16.04 and added Steam, but it won’t launch anything. When I press the icon, nothing happens.

You're thinking about an older version of Steam, right? I recall that the 16.04 LTS release had some unusual problems with it.

Check the instructions carefully. I don't recall the exact steps for adding Steam to Ubuntu 16.04, but this should help.

Consider removing Steam if you no longer need it, or keep it alongside your installation depending on your preferences.

Update the package list using apt-get update. Install Steam via sudo apt-get install steam, but if the software app fails, try using the terminal method.
