Yes, it's possible on Steam. Playing a game with one account and using another account for a different game is allowed.

Using FamilyShare allows you to distribute games across multiple Steam accounts. Only one person can participate at a time; therefore, if a friend is using a Steam account you shared, they cannot play any games until you stop the other player.

If he isn't playing, I can take over; if I don't have the game, should I buy it?

If he isn’t playing, you can join the game via his account on your account using the Family Share feature. You don’t need to purchase the game if he already owns it.

I only need one copy on his AC, then I’ll be able to play smoothly. Is the progress saved in the shared game or do all players have their own?

Only one copy is required if you use Family Share. I don’t know about progress.

You could try getting a code from Steam, then send it to Steam Support. After that, you can update the game on G2A. It depends on how Steam handles the process.

If the code is from another site than Steam but can be activated via Steam, visit the library, select 'Add a Game,' click 'Activate a product on Steam,' and input the code to add it normally.

Check the Steam page for details about your account type. If it's Steam Account, you should be able to update your nickname password there.
