While my sibling was away, a random Steam profile quickly added him along with many others as friends. He hadn’t been online to approve the request, yet it was granted. The profile then entered into numerous Steam trades with him on the marketplace, using various spam accounts, which ultimately drained all of his funds—most notably $89 for a DOTA 2 item he never played or downloaded. Most of his marketplace items were also taken. It seems Steam isn’t taking action to recover these losses, as shown in this help article: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/vi...-2400-8D24. My brother’s money was completely stolen. I bought him a $100 Steam Gift Card for his birthday, and it’s disheartening to see nearly everything taken from his wallet through these illegal trades. He had Steam Guard enabled and never received a friend request asking for access. We’re really puzzled. We’re already filing a support ticket, but based on their policies, we fear they might not help. My brother has changed his password—what else can he do? How did this happen? He’s devastated, and I’m deeply worried about any funds or cards linked to his Steam account again.

Your Steam account or PC might have been compromised. I recommend completely wiping Steam and restoring it from backups.

It seems his profile was compromised. Using unique passwords for each service would be wise. Fortunately, he only lost $100 and retained full access. This could be a valuable lesson to take away.
