Hello everyone! I'm a long-time member who's built some custom PCs, but I've recently been asked to help set up a friend's small business. It's a deli with three Wi-Fi scales that need to be connected to a private network without internet access (need to verify that). They also require a router.

From what I know, just setting up the router with a new SSID and password might not be enough. The best practice is to ensure it isn't connected to the modem at all—maybe even unplugging it?

What's the ideal router choice for this kind of configuration? Thanks, Ryan!

Avoid hiding the SSID, it reduces security. Opt for an access point instead of a router. Many devices now expect Wi-Fi connectivity and don’t function properly without it. What are your requirements? A variety of access points would work well, especially the unified models I prefer.

Confirm if these wireless scales will connect to a local network device without WAN access. A router could be useful to provide a DHCP server for the devices. The forum suggests using an Edgerouter-X and an AP, such as a UAP-AC-Lite. Both are affordable and their configuration is similar to setting up with regular internet; just avoid linking to an internet-connected network. Additionally, check the scale specs to ensure compatibility with 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands, then place the AP at the lowest power it can detect. Implement security features if supported and use an open channel. This setup helps because the scales are stationary, transmit little data, keep signals strong in the shop, and minimize interference from nearby WiFi networks.

I verified the setup will not require internet. The scales will connect to a device running the scale software. Perfect, that matches what I expected. This is what you meant by it? You can proceed with this link: https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-UAP-AC-L...191&sr=8-1

Confirmed it functions well. Which devices are already linked to the network? What DHCP server should I use? Likely I’ll create a separate subnet on your primary network for the scales and turn off internet access for this group. Where’s the router for handling internet-connected equipment? Most entry-level products support several subnets and SSIDs.

Thanks Electronics Wizardy, your setup involves only three scales and a laptop connected to the network. The IP addresses will be fixed. Would you prefer using just a router or an access point? From what I know, there doesn’t seem to be an ISP nearby at the moment. Apologies for the mix-up between router and AP in this configuration.

Because the IPs remain fixed, you don’t require a DHCP server. One of those APs should suffice. ROuter will also function here, but avoid using the WAN port. You might be able to find a very affordable option.
