Starting a system from a USB drive on a Gigabyte motherboard
I frequently start up from USB. Insert the USB device and choose it in the BIOS settings.
It isn't listed as a bootable option, and you're certain it's not the flash drive since Ubuntu has worked on other machines using it.
What model of motherboard are you using? Your system shows two USB choices when a bootable drive is connected—one for older systems and another for UEFI. Only one option functions properly.
It's a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P. I only needed to click F12 and choose it once before. When using the flash drive with an empty hard drive, it shows a black screen asking for a boot device. To locate the "UEFI" and "Legacy" settings, check the BIOS menu during startup or refer to the motherboard manual.
Connect the drive and power on by pressing DEL during the startup screen. Adjust the boot sequence so your USB is listed first. It seems the system doesn’t recognize USB as a boot device. There’s also a hotkey for entering the boot queue, though I’m not sure if it’s F12 or another key.
It appears USB isn't included in the boot menu at all. Available choices are UEFI first or Legacy first.
