Sure, I can help with that. Booting Windows from an SSD that contains a pre-installed OS can be done, but you'll need to format the drive properly. Make sure to back up important data first. Using a bootable USB or a live USB can help transfer the OS without affecting the existing files. As for potential damage, it depends on how you handle the process—proper formatting is safe, but incorrect steps might cause issues. Let me know if you need more details!

Windows may occasionally malfunction under certain conditions, especially if crucial files are stored there. I’d consider the risks if important data resides on that drive.

Yes it is possible, however if the drive was used on an old computer, you may have to set BIOS to CSM or combability mode in the storage options. Other than that, not much you will have to do. I do recommend removing all the drivers on your old system before booting into the new one to avoid conflicts with the new hardware. At some point you want to do a clean install for best performance. You won't destroy any data but the overall system performance may not be optimal.

The old setup is no longer functional, which explains my issue. Should I perform a fresh installation on a different drive and then transfer my files from the old one? I’m not sure how two Windows installations on separate drives might interact.

In BIOS you choose the main boot device and that’s essentially all. You can also start a live Linux system of your preference and then add the GRUB boot manager, which will boot before Windows and make it simple to handle several Windows versions.

On Windows 10 or 11, it should automatically restart and resolve issues if the boot settings match between versions. Just make sure both systems use compatible boot configurations so it can boot successfully.
