It's an old but still popular game launched on March 13, 1998. The updated version focuses on refreshed graphics and revised text and sound. If it were a remake, it wouldn't rely on OpenGL.

yes, even the 1998 release with DirectX 5 runs faster than the real version. We actually have Vulkan now, and OpenGL 2.1 isn't what I was thinking.
