I plan to use an SSD as my primary boot device while keeping all my user files and programs on the HDD. The main issue I face is that applications tend to automatically install on the SSD. Would it be possible to rename the drives—such as labeling the HDD as "C" and the SSD as another name—to ensure programs install on the traditional boot drive? Or does the naming matter, and will the program always try the SSD instead?

Pretty much every program that I've installed asks you where you want to install it. Sometimes it requires selecting the "Custom installation" option or something like that, but I haven't had an installer that doesn't give me a choice as to where the program installs

Even with a standard installation, some applications restrict your options. These may be too small, unnecessary, or there might be better alternatives that fit your requirements.

I wondered whether the default programs should be installed on the primary storage drive or wherever the operating system resides.
