SSD installation fails to appear in Mobo setup tool
I replaced my 1TB Samsung drive with a 2TB WD Black SSD (SN850X) in an M.2 slot. Before installing, I copied game files from the old drive to the new one inside the enclosure. After swapping drives, the WD did not appear in the file explorer. The Samsung drive showed up correctly once reinstalled and again when placed in the enclosure. To make the WD appear on your motherboard, try reinstalling it carefully and ensure proper BIOS settings. Your MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Max should work with this setup.
I handled the issue by troubleshooting with another person. It turned out my Slot 2 isn’t compatible with Gen 4 media. I swapped my boot drive into Slot 2 and my new drive into Slot 1, which is Gen 4 compatible. I assumed Gen 4 drives would still fit in Gen 3 slots, but it seems they don’t.
Gen 4 drives need backward compatibility. Perhaps this port is turned off if other SATA or PCIe connections are active.
