Sound when PSU switch is slowly flipped
Hi everyone,
I attempted to turn off the PSU by flipping the switch and noticed a noise. After pausing briefly, I continued flipping and the noise ceased once the switch was fully in the "off" position. I’ve since realized that slowly flipping the switch isn’t recommended—similar to light switches. Given this happened twice in quick succession, should I be concerned about possible damage to my PC? Do you think I need to replace the PSU?
I’ve definitely learned from this experience and will ensure I flip the switch quickly moving forward. Looking back, it might have been better not to turn it off at all since I was only swapping DisplayPort cables. Also, if this matters, my PSU is a Superflower Leadex VII (A-tier according to the link you shared).
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Would it be necessary to swap out the PSU?
First, share your build details clearly: CPU, CPU cooler, motherboard, RAM, SSD/HDD, GPU, PSU, chassis, OS, monitor.
Also include the age of the PSU along with its make and model.
Second, consider adding an audio or video clip to show what you're experiencing.
I’ve learned from this mistake and will avoid it in the future.
Third, if you decide to change it, you won’t hear any arc or crackling sounds—so a PSU replacement isn’t needed.
When the switch contacts aren't securely closed or fully open, a high-temperature arc develops, causing melting, pitting, and gradual degradation of the metal contacts over time.
