You're considering a direct clean install of Windows 10 on your Windows 7 system. It's common advice to upgrade first, but you're curious about the outcome if you skip that step and proceed straight to the installation. What will happen? The new Windows 10 will likely overwrite your current files, so you'll need to reinstall everything from scratch. As for the serial key, you won't be able to use your Windows 7 key—it's tied to the old OS. Make sure you have a fresh copy of the Windows 10 ISO ready and a USB drive prepared.

You won’t receive a Windows 10 activation key until you complete the upgrade process. This will prevent you from verifying the installation. Proceed with the upgrade, obtain your key, and then perform a new installation.

You're unsure about what will happen next. Just enter your Windows 7 key. It's recommended to perform an in-place upgrade and then use the built-in reinstall tool—no need for flash drives or anything extra.

Yes, the process includes an option to perform a clean installation during the upgrade, and it doesn’t need your key to be entered.

The new update is ready... would you like me to save it onto a USB drive? Lol

After completing the upgrade, you can use the fresh install tool to set up Windows 10 on another drive, such as a new SSD, and your serial key should work properly.

According to what I've learned, your key is linked to your motherboard, meaning it should work as long as the drive is connected to that computer.

You receive the key at the designated location, usually provided by the service provider or upon arrival.

It appears Windows 10 upgrades behave much like an OEM setup for Windows 7.
