Hey guys, I bought a hp z400 workstation and found an obscure thing I don't know how to describe it, there is thermal paste on it and I know it's not the CPU so I'm not sure what it is. Can someone help me out please. Thanks.

It's a heat sink. But the actual chip wasn't visible right away. You'll have to take off the heat paste so we can see the details on the die.

No, the heat sink is meant to sit atop the CPU.

Check your edit, just one image loaded at first. And no, they’re available anywhere with heat.

Sure, I appreciate the suggestion. I'll grab some rubbing alcohol and look into it later.

It looks like you're trying to identify whether this board is a Northbridge or Southbridge. You mentioned it's from a generation that supported those chips (LGA 1366, part number 586766-002).

1366 didn't have a southbridge back then; that era saw Intel embed most components on-chip. I haven't seen a northbridge that big, though remembering my I7 920 and the large heat sink on my board.

it's a north bridge chip, this is essentially an x58 mobo, one of the last intel platform still with it. it can get quite hot so some airflow is needed. altho its working temp is quite high so no worries.
