Hello, I recently overclocked my laptop and it has been functioning well for two years without any issues. However, I've been monitoring the clock speed and noticed unexpected and significant jumps that shouldn't occur. The investigation began after games like LoL or other titles that don’t require a high-end system started lagging from 144fps to barely 60, even dropping to around 25 in areas with high settings. I adjusted my clock speed to 880 from 745 and increased the memory clock to 2300 from 2000, and so far it has worked fine for two years. Recently, during a gaming session, I checked the MSI Afterburner and found that my clock speed was 980 and the memory clock was 8000—this is completely unrealistic. Afterwards, it returned to normal, regardless of whether I went back to the default settings. I’ve tried everything: playing at the lowest setting still manages around 60fps, reinstalling drivers didn’t help, resetting Windows via the built-in tool on Windows 10 didn’t restore performance, and deleting all personal files didn’t improve things. Under heavy load (like 65°C idle or 45°C), temperatures are acceptable. I’m open to suggestions, especially about thermal throttling, which I read could be a cause, though it doesn’t seem to happen for me right now. For reference, someone mentioned that low FPS might indicate thermal throttling, but it doesn’t seem to be the case for me. Please keep an eye on CPU temperatures and let me know if you have any data tomorrow.
Your temperatures are low for gaming on a laptop.
If the processor overheats and slows down, performance will drop.
It’s two years old; how often have you cleaned the heatsink fins from dust?
Looks like my FPS was decreasing because I had the "wait for vertycal sync" setting off, and now I’m getting a steady 200 FPS in League. That seems like a simple issue, sorry for interrupting this forum.
😀
Your temperatures are quite low for gaming on a laptop. If the processor is overheating and reducing performance, frames may experience issues. It's 2 years old, how often have you removed the heatsink fins to remove dust?
