Asus' Prime line has gained recognition for strong performance and minimal RGB clutter. Many early X299 evaluations used this board. When compared to today's mainstream CPUs, it lags behind even the 10th gen X processors, which are nearing two years old and outperform options like the Ryzen 9 5950x in both gaming and productivity. While there may be value in the used market, its high power usage makes it a less appealing choice compared to newer alternatives.

The appeal of the 10th gen X series comes from its 48 PCIe Gen 3 lanes. For someone planning to stream and try multicam capture solutions such as the newly launched Camlink Pro or DeckLink 4 HDMI, these extra lanes are a big plus. At that price point, it’s not too bad. In Australia, where I live, a Threadripper chip with Gen 4 lanes would cost over 2K just for the chip, plus nearly 1K for compatible motherboards. When comparing X series chips, they’re available at half the price of similar options, making them a reasonable choice even if they lag slightly in overall compute performance. I’d mainly use it for dedicated streaming PC tasks where top speed isn’t critical.

If we’re discussing a Ryzen-based setup, it fully activates all PCIe lanes when you install a GPU with 16x dedicated lanes, though you can revert to 8x mode leaving some CPU bandwidth for other tasks—minimal impact on performance. Chipsets also offer PCIe lanes that can be assigned to PCIe devices, though there’s a slight latency cost; it’s still better than no functionality at all.
