If the setting was already active, let Windows decide the option, remove the smooth edges of fonts in the list, click apply, then turn it back on again.

I actually encountered a situation where I needed to do the opposite, but I attempted step 4 (the default on my PC) and it failed. Appreciate the suggestion!
