I previously had a decent scanner, but it needed special drivers and stopped when ink ran out. Are there any standalone scanners that run well on Linux? The SANE page’s hardware list is tricky to find.

Those who still use SANE are merely graphical front ends. Any compatible device listed on the official site should suffice. Look into the devices that match your requirements. I can't provide personal opinions since we rely on HP All In Ones with the hplip driver.

The HPLIP driver is available under an open-source license. It comes pre-installed in most major Linux distributions, typically found as the hplip package.
