The core of the game is free, with all modules and necessary items available for download. The free version includes access to aircraft and online elements you can use without contributing financially.

DCS World features a complimentary Su-25T "Frogfoot" and non-armed TF-51D Mustang planes. During the holiday period there was a special discount where all extras were reduced by 75%. If you try it out and dive deeper, I recommend starting with the Flaming Cliffs 3 module (covers Mig-29A & 29S, SU-27 & SU-33, F-15C, A-10A, SU-25).

I’m planning to begin downloading it as soon as Arma 3 is done. I’m hoping I’ll enjoy it. With limited free time due to work, I only have about a week and a bit each year for a relaxing break, so I’ll keep playing until then.

I usually operate my joystick while flying planes in BF1942 and BF2. I haven’t played much in BF3 and 4 because of the issues with online play and BF4 not launching—so I’m not sure if you can actually pilot jets.

Other than the standard version, there are several alternatives such as Airplane Simulator by Microsoft, Arma, Hawx 2, and BF.

I haven't really engaged in flight-based games, yet Battlefield 1942 remains enjoyable thanks to its aerial elements.

Other titles worth mentioning include War Thunder, Wings of Prey, IL2 Cliffs of Dover (needs some fan-made patches), IL2 Battle for Stalingrad, RUSE (can use a stick if you try it), Elite Dangerous (looks impressive), Take On Helicopters, Take On Mars, and Kerbal Space Program. I’m excited to see what arrives with my new HOTAS A10 Warthog stick!
