i sold my 1050 to get the 970.. i'm gonna test if its really an os issue but this will take time

Which GTX 970 model did you receive? Please confirm you didn’t obtain the counterfeit version.

It's an EVGA GXT 970 SSC. Everything seems to be working fine. I'm not sure if the problem is related to the VRAM, as the 970 typically uses about 3.5GB of RAM.

It reached such a level because of that setting... well over 3GB already.

at exactly 1366x768 the performance is poor. mad max (2015) uses under 2gb, but something seems off. note: setting textures to normal didn’t change much on high resolution, yet it starts using about 1.4gb. as time goes on it keeps rising to around 3.5gb. another update: i installed windows 7 on a secondary drive in a partition and it runs much smoother than before. edited july 26, 2018 by Triventular
