some gadgets connected via USB cease functioning properly or operate slowly
Hi friends, I'm facing some problems with my Rampage V motherboard. It's been an ongoing issue that's been causing trouble. Devices are connected as shown in the picture. When I move files between two external HDDs for about 5 to 10 minutes, everything works fine—mouse and keyboard function properly. But after around 5 to 15 minutes, the mouse cursor jumps around, stops responding, and eventually the keyboard becomes unresponsive. Even after plugging in two different cables to separate ports, the keyboard is still dead. It seems like either the keyboard is malfunctioning (it's a HyperX Elite FPS Pro model), or one of the USB ports is damaged. I'm also considering driver issues or a short circuit. I was thinking about reinstalling Windows and drivers if this continues. Yesterday, the mouse stopped working completely, but I could fix it by unplugging and plugging it back in. Since my Rampage V has 10 USB ports, I need to figure out which one is causing the problem or if the keyboard itself might be the issue. I haven't noticed this happening when only the keyboard and mouse are connected, but I'll test it again and let you know the outcome. I remember it mostly occurred during gaming—mouse cursor would freeze, then jump around and become sluggish. Recently, after finishing a file transfer, the mouse's RGB light froze to blue, and both the mouse and keyboard stopped working. Yesterday, the keyboard's RGB light also froze, confirming the issue. I think the first step should be to try using a PC without any external HDDs and report how it behaves with just the keyboard and mouse connected.
It seems the USB controller is struggling with two external drives. I'll switch my keyboard and mouse to the controllers listed above (USB 2.0). You don't require USB 3 speeds for keyboards or mice. Just connect the keyboard and mouse to the row with the PS2 port (labeled Keyboard/Mice).
These ports are indeed for flashing BIOS (ROG CONNECT+KEYBOT). Are you wondering if they can be used for other devices like peripherals? The situation you're facing is quite typical. You have two ports, but only need three—keyboard uses two, and the mouse and external HDDs use the remaining one. Since you don’t need the USB passthrough for those, it should work fine. Connecting your mouse and keyboard to USB 2.0 ports and using the blue ones for HDDs will help you test what happens.
Use a USB 3 port to connect your device. I’m not sure if there are BIOS ports available for regular tasks on an ASUS board—they’re usually red and located at the bottom left, suitable for general input/output. It’s normal to experience issues when connecting multiple high-speed devices via USB.
It's understandable to be puzzled about the number of USB ports. The presence of 10 ports suggests it's designed for versatility, but if you're experiencing issues with just a few, it could indicate a problem with those specific ports rather than a general malfunction.
There may be several controllers available, so you can experiment with connecting one to another for a single drive. Check the motherboard manual for details on which controller is linked to each one.
I'll review the MoBo manual. Based on your setup, it seems you likely have only one controller, so using separate USB 2.0 ports for the mouse and keyboard makes sense. The remaining blue ports can be used for external hard drives.
Yeah usually that works. In my cheap B365 board there is one 2.0 controller for 3 ports and one 3.0 controller for 3 ports usually i plug in all the input stuff that don't require high bandwidth into usb 2.0 and the ones require high bandwidth to 3.0 so i don't get this glitches i still feel slow speed when using more than one usb 3.0 drive at the time.
