Hello everyone, I have an old Lenovo G40-30 laptop with just 2GB of RAM installed. I wanted to upgrade it by adding an 8GB stick. After checking Task Manager, the memory was listed as DDR3 2GB at 1333MHz. I bought a Kingston DDR3 1333MHz CL9 SODIMM 8GB stick and replaced the old one. Now the laptop still shows a black screen even though the power indicator lights up white. I learned online that some Lenovo models need about 5 minutes to boot after installing new RAM, but it took over 20 minutes without any improvement. When I tried putting back the original RAM, it worked just fine, but with the new one it didn’t. I think the RAM I got might not be compatible with this model, even though my specs suggest otherwise. Please help me understand what’s going on. Thanks!

You received standard DDR3 or DDR3L SO-DIMM modules. A quick online search confirms the system requires DDR3L, which operates at 1.35V rather than DDR3’s 1.5V.

I won’t find any DDR3L label on my new RAM, so I’ll admit I probably got it wrong.

Crucial recommends 1600Mhz RAM, but you can use either 1333Mhz or 1600Mhz. Your Task Manager shows 1333Mhz as the previous setting.

The original 2 GB RAM stick doesn't specify it's DDR3L. It seems this laptop model is outdated and likely uses older RAM technology.

The label on the previous unit mentions PC3L, but searching confirms it's actually DDR3L. I should double-check everything in the future now. I already wasted $50 on nothing.

It’s wise to review the manual for your notebook to find out the compatible RAM types and their maximum capacity.

Based on what I found in older sources and the Crucial software checker, it seems the situation is manageable.
