I’m setting up a laptop with 8 GB RAM, an i7 processor (around 4500U) and a GTX 745M graphics card. I’m using Windows 8.1 with a VM running Arch Linux and the desktop environment LDXE. My goal is to record instructional videos for my lab, but I’ve faced issues with CamStudio—especially saving files correctly. I’m looking for alternative software or solutions that work better for non-gaming tasks, so I can re-record the video before next Wednesday. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Camtasia works well for recording. DXtory is great for gaming content. OBS is another option you might consider.

I enjoy Bandicam, though the free edition shows a prominent watermark at the top. OBS works well for free use and isn't limited to just games.

I also suggest using OBS. It’s been great for my screen recording projects. In the Broadcast Settings, choose File Output Only. Here are the key settings I use.
