Was installing a new GPU and CPU starting smoking. I forgot to plug my molex cord into my fan hub. The main CPU cord is now damaged. Pictures will be attached. The actual cover for fan hub connector came off too. Where should I be checking for damage on the mobo. Is it worth turning back on now that it is properly connected? Should I remove the fan hub and connect straight to the mobo if I try? Take everything out and just start the CPU? I am worried about the damage that was done to the main cord. I have a really old backup computer, so that is probably the answer for now. Hoping I just damaged the cpu cooler. https://imgur.com/gallery/4V4JnIf well, figured out what I did wrong. Plugged the USB connector cord into the AIO fan connector. And had one of the AIO connectors plugged into the USB hub. Burnt the cords. Hopefully didn’t fry the CPU. The exposed cables worry me tho.

Smoking sounds really concerning. Did you fry your CPU or something similar? That could happen if there was smoke coming from the board somewhere. Don't turn anything on if it was smoking from the power supply unit, as this might cause more damage. If the issue was due to a faulty cable—like plugging in the wrong connector for the fan header—try removing all components and see if the motherboard powers up normally. Check the debug lights or code afterward. The fan hub cover seems like it could have blown off. Regarding the motherboard and PSU, make sure they’re functioning properly. Try powering them on and off, and test the CPU if you suspect it wasn’t affected. Avoid using any other parts unless necessary, since the CPU will heat up without proper cooling. If everything runs smoothly and there’s no smoke from the PSU, you might be okay—but it’s hard to say for sure without more info.

You attempted to install the graphics card while the computer was active? And what about any harm to the CPU and its socket, besides a damaged cable?

The device wasn’t working properly. The cooler hasn’t been taken out yet, and so far there’s no obvious harm to the connection point. There’s a faint scent of burning present.

I figured it out. I accidentally connected one of my AIO cords to the USB hub, and then mistakenly plugged the USB hub cord into the AIO fan port. What a huge error.

Ugh, disappointing news. I own a no-smoking sticker for my PC, but I haven’t used it much since I’ve been tempted enough.

Goodbye, may it break soon. Other components might still work. But the motherboard to that port or a significant part of the HUB and AIO could be faulty. RIP. I hope nothing else got damaged on the motherboard, but proceed carefully—there’s a chance the port or board was affected. Please be sure no further harm occurred.

Seems like the CPU got damaged. Hard but it could have been worse.
